<p>Reverdia, the joint venture between life sciences and materials sciences company DSM and Roquette Frères, a global producer of starch and starch-derivatives, has begun operations in Cassano Spinola, Italy, at a commercial-scale plant producing Biosuccinium™ sustainable succinic acid. The plant, which has a capacity of about 10,000 tonnes/yr, is unique in its kind, being the world’s first dedicated large-scale plant for the production of succinic acid from renewable resources. It is also the only commercial facility to benefit from experience gained using low-pH yeast technology on a demonstration plant scale; Reverdia regards this as essential to be able to promise further improvements in product quality.</p>
<p>Key applications for Biosuccinium™ include polybutylene succinate (PBS), polyester polyols for polyurethanes, coating and composite resins, phthalate-free plasticizers, and 1,4 butanediol. End products include footwear, packaging and paints.</p>

<p>Reverdia, la joint venture tra DSM, nota azienda operante nel campo delle scienze naturali e delle scienze dei materiali, e Roquette Frères, produttore di amido e derivati a livello mondiale, ha iniziato l’attività nello stabilimento di Cassano Spinola in Italia, un impianto per la produzione su scala commerciale di Biosuccinium™, acido succinico sostenibile. La fabbrica, avente capacità a regime di circa 10.000 t/anno, è l’unica del suo genere, in quanto la prima al mondo dedicata alla produzione su vasta scala di acido succinico da risorse rinnovabili. Inoltre, è l’unico impianto industriale a trarre vantaggio dall’esperienza acquisita nello sfruttamento della tecnologia del lievito a basso pH a livello di impianto dimostrativo. Reverdia lo considera una tappa indispensabile in vista di ulteriori passi avanti per quanto concerne la qualità del prodotto.</p>
<p>Le applicazioni chiave di Biosuccinium™ comprendono i polioli poliesteri di succinato polibutilene (PBS), le resine da rivestimento e composite, i plastificanti esenti da ftalati ed i butanedioli 1,4. I prodotti finali sono calzature, imballaggi e pitture.</p>

<p>Reverdia, a joint venture between DSM and Roquette, and Helm have signed an agreement for the European distribution and joint market development of Reverdia’s Biosuccinium™ sustainable succinic acid. The partnership will build on Helm’s strong position in Europe as a marketing enterprise and distributor for a wide portfolio of chemical products, and Reverdia’s emerging leadership position for the commercialization of renewable succinic acid.</p>
<p>Biosuccinium™ sustainable succinic acid is a new renewable raw material, derived from non-fossil feedstock and produced with unique and proprietary yeast-based fermentation technology resulting in the production of bio-based succinic acid with best-in-class quality, economics and environmental footprint. The technology has been proven in the 300 tons demo plant in Lestrem, France, that has been operational since early 2010.</p>
<p>Reverdia will be the first in the world to have a large scale facility for the commercial production of bio-based succinic acid, which is currently being completed in Cassano Spinola, Italy. The plant is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2012.</p>
<p>Biosuccinium™ offers quality, economic and environmental benefits for a broad range of markets and applications. These include coolants, surfactants, adhesives, corrosion inhibitors, lubricants, photo development fluids, herbicides, soldering pastes, runway deicers, polyurethanes, coating resins, phthalate-free plasticizers, polybutylene succinate (PBS) and many others. Materials and products based on Biosuccinium™ are (partly) renewable, using fewer of the earth’s limited fossil resources, whilst delivering a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. For example, Biosuccinium™ sustainable succinic acid has a reduced carbon footprint compared to fossil-based adipic acid, a conventional chemical used in many of the mentioned target segments: it can generate an improvement of about 90%.</p>

<p>Reverdia, ein Joint Venture zwischen DSM und Roquette, und Helm haben einen Kooperationsvertrag über die Vermarktung und Distribution der von Reverdia produzierten, Biosuccinium™ biobasierten Bernsteinsäure in Europa unterzeichnet. Die starke Marktposition von Helm als Marketing-und Distributionsunternehmen mit einem breiten Portfolio an Chemikalien, sowie Reverdia‘s aufstrebende Führungsrolle im Bereich der Vermarktung biobasierter Bernsteinsäure bilden die Grundlage für die Kooperation.</p>
<p>Biosuccinium™, nachhaltig produzierte Bernsteinsäure, ist ein erneuerbares Produkt, welches aus nichtfossilen Rohstoffen gewonnen wird. Das einzigartige, geschützte Produktionsverfahren durch Fermentation von Hefe führt zu erstklassiger Qualität, Wirtschaftlichkeit und Reduzierung des CO<sub>2</sub>-Fußabdrucks. <p>Biosuccinium™ bietet qualitative, wirtschaftliche und ökologische Vorteile für ein weites Spektrum an Anwendungen und Märkten. Dieses sind z.B. Kühlmittel, Tenside, Klebstoffe, Korrosionsschutzmittel, Schmiermittel, Filmentwicklungsflüssigkeiten, Herbizide, Lötpasten, Enteisungsmittel für Start- und Landebahnen, Polyurethane, Lackharze, phthalatfreie Weichmacher, Polybutylsuccinat (PBS) und weitere. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A collaboration between Proviron and Reverdia has resulted in the introduction of Provichem® 2511 Eco, a Di-Methyl-Succinate (DMS) that can be used as a solvent and a raw material for fine chemicals such as pigments and UV stabilizers. Biosuccinium™ is made from renewable resources and has a much better carbon footprint than several other fossil based chemicals &#8211; such as adipic acid or the petrochemical version of succinic acid. As a result, Provichem® 2511 Eco enables customers to improve the sustainability characteristics of their products.</p>
<p>Biosuccinium™ based DMS, finds use in various applications such as pigments, UV stabilizers, solvents, flavours and fragrances. The unique features of DMS based pigments make them suitable candidates for usage in a large number of products such as inks, coatings, plastics, textiles and even in paints. Solvents made with DMS have good paint removal properties and they offer a potential sustainable alternative to dibasic ester (DBE) solvents or other fossil-based solvents.</p>
<p>Proviron’s Provichem® 2511 Eco will be produced in Belgium and commercial volumes are available now. Biosuccinium™ will be produced in the world’s first large scale commercial plant for renewable succinic acid, in Cassano Spinola, Italy. This plant is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2012. Representative samples and larger volumes are already available.</p>

<p><strong>WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 20, 2012)</strong> – The Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) today announced the finalists for the <a href="http://polyurethane.americanchemistry.com/Polyurethanes-Technical-Conference/Innovation-Award.html" target="_blank">2012 Polyurethane Innovation Award</a>. Boral Composites, Inc., Huntsman and Reverdia are this year’s finalists for the coveted Polyurethane Innovation Award and are each being recognized for their forward thinking advancements to the broader polyurethanes field. Attendees at the <a href="http://polyurethane.americanchemistry.com/Polyurethanes-Technical-Conference/2012-Conference.html" target="_blank">2012 Polyurethanes Technical Conference</a>, which runs from September 24 to 26 at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta, will have the opportunity to vote for one nominee during the conference’s opening session. The winner will be announced during the closing session on September 26.</p>
<p>“This year’s nominees for the Polyurethanes Innovation Award exceeded expectations once again. Our three finalists have each offered a product or technology that provides something truly unique and innovative to the industry. We offer our congratulations to Boral Composites, Huntsman and Reverdia on their exceptional work,” said CPI Senior Director Lee Salamone. “As we celebrate 75 years of polyurethanes, we’ll see firsthand how continuous innovation has kept this industry strong and given it longevity. These finalists show the industry’s tradition of innovation and advancement remains strong today.”</p>

<li><strong>Boral Composites, Inc.</strong> was nominated for its TruExterior® Trim. “Boral TruExterior® Trim uses a new proprietary urethane technology to create a composite decorative exterior trim that offers phenomenal performance, remarkable workability and a lasting look for new home construction and/or remodeling.  The unique composite structure means Boral TruExterior Trim has exceptional durability and is resistant to rotting, moisture absorption, cracking, splitting, and is virtually free from termite, fungus and mold attack,” said Boral Composites, Inc.</li>
<li><strong>Huntsman</strong> was nominated for its VITROX® Composite Resins. “In the trenchless pipe repair market, cure-in-place pipe (CIPP) systems are a popular choice. Huntsman’s VITROX resin is a polyurethane-based pipe repair resin,” said Huntsman.  VITROX resin provides a long handling windo, fast curing time and excellent high temperature resistance properties, according to Huntsman.</li>
<li><strong>Reverdia</strong> was nominated for its Biosuccinium™ product. According to Reverdia, Biosuccinium is a 100% bio-based and sustainable succinic acid that enables the manufacture of polyester polyol based polyurethane products with low environmental footprints. “Biosuccinium sustainable succini acid is produced by Reverdia from renewable, plant-based resources which are converted using a unique, proprietary, low pH, yeast technology, biotechnology process,” Reverdia said.</li>

<p><strong>Award Selection<br />
</strong><br />
All eligible submissions are evaluated by a panel of judges comprised of experts representing technical disciplines and the polyurethane supply chain. Judges evaluate and score all entries based on impact on the polyurethanes industry, uniqueness of the innovation, quality of the science and societal impact. The three submissions with the highest scores were selected as finalists to be considered for the 2012 Polyurethane Innovation Award.</p>
<p>Voting for the Polyurethane Innovation Award will take place during the Opening Session of the 2012 Polyurethanes Technical Conference on Monday, September 24. Each individual conference registrant attending the Opening Session may cast one vote for one finalist. The finalist with the most votes from the audience will receive an additional 20 points to be added to the score from the judges. The innovation with the highest total score will be deemed the winner and announced on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, during the Closing Session of the 2012 Polyurethanes Technical Conference.</p>
<p><strong>Eligibility<br />
</strong><br />
Award entries in polyurethane chemistry may include finished products, initiatives, training or education programs, or processes or processing equipment. Entries pertaining to a polyurethane product or polyurethane manufacture must relate to polyurethane chemistry defined as the reaction of an isocyanate with a polyol.</p>
<p>Entries for 2012 were required to represent new innovations that had not been previously submitted for the Innovation Award and had not been available for commercial sales longer than 15 months prior to June 29, 2012.</p>

<p>Bio-based succinic acid is derived from non-fossil feedstock and produced with sustainable production technologies that minimize carbon footprint. It is a building block that can be used in the manufacture of polymers, resins and many other products. Key applications include footwear, packaging and paints.</p>
<p>Reverdia will be the first in the world to have a large scale facility for the commercial production of bio-based succinic acid, which will be marketed under its Biosuccinium™ brand. It will benefit from the best and most sustainable fermentation technology to produce bio-based succinic acid, which has been in development since 2008.</p>
<p>The new facility, scheduled to be operational by the end of Q3 2012 will have a capacity of about 10 kt, and is located on the Roquette site in Cassano Spinola, Italy. The proximity to the port of Genoa ensures efficient global logistics.</p>
<p>It will be fully backward-integrated with on-site production of the starch feedstock and will employ co-generation of steam and power as well as on-site waste water treatment. All combined this results in a best-in-class carbon footprint for Biosuccinium™.</p>
<p><em>“Biosuccinium™ is a unique, high quality bio-based succinic acid produced with the most advanced and sustainable technology,”</em> said Will van den Tweel, Reverdia’s General Manager. <em>“Reverdia developed a unique proprietary yeast technology to convert sugars into succinic acid. The novel process is simple, stable, very energy efficient and generates less waste and impurities than the bacteria-based technologies which are currently being used in alternative routes for bio-based succinic acid.”</em></p>
<p>A demonstration plant on the Roquette site in Lestrem, France has been operational since January 2010 to validate and optimize the technology as well as to provide pre-commercial samples for application development. <em>“The demonstration plant provided an excellent opportunity to gain technical experience on the production process of Biosuccinium™. Combined with the expertise we have with the scale-up of processes and installations, we expect a smooth start-up of our commercial plant in Cassano.”</em> says Jean-Pierre Vannier, Operations Director for Reverdia.</p>
<p>Biosuccinium™ will provide the impetus for an entire range of more renewable, and more sustainable products. At a larger commercial scale, Biosuccinium™ is envisioned to be able to compete with both petrochemical-based succinic acid and petrochemical-based adipic acid. While existing markets for chemically produced succinic acid include pharmaceuticals, food, coatings and pigments, Reverdia believes that the availability of competitive, high quality and sustainable succinic acid such as Biosuccinium™ will drive the emergence of new applications. <p>Elle renforce sa position de leader en acide succinique biosourcé par la réalisation de la première installation industrielle mondiale à grande échelle.</p>
<p>Reverdia, la coentreprise entre Royal DSM et Roquette Frères, a été formellement approuvée par les autorités de régulation de la concurrence compétentes. Reverdia souhaite capitaliser sur sa position de leader émergent dans le domaine de l&#8217;acide succinique biosourcé par le biais de sa technologie de production exclusive et en garantissant un approvisionnement fiable pour répondre à l&#8217;évolution de la demande du marché. Reverdia allie les compétences de DSM en matière de Sciences des Matériaux et de biotechnologie au savoir-faire de Roquette dans le domaine de la transformation des matières premières végétales.</p>
<p>L&#8217;acide succinique biosourcé est issu de ressources non fossiles et est produit au moyen de technologies de production durables qui minimisent l&#8217;empreinte carbone. Il représente un intermédiaire essentiel qui peut être utilisé dans la fabrication de polymères, de résines et de nombreux autres produits. On peut citer, parmi les applications principales, les chaussures, les emballages et les peintures.</p>
<p>Reverdia sera la première entreprise au monde à disposer d&#8217;une installation à grande échelle pour la production commerciale d&#8217;acide succinique biosourcé, lequel sera commercialisé sous sa marque Biosuccinium™. Elle bénéficiera de la meilleure et de la plus durable des technologies de fermentation qui permette de produire de l&#8217;acide succinique biosourcé; une technologie qui était en cours de développement depuis 2008.</p>
<p>La nouvelle installation, qui devrait être opérationnelle d&#8217;ici à la fin du troisième trimestre 2012, aura une capacité d&#8217;environ 10.000T. Elle se situe sur le site Roquette de Cassano Spinola en Italie. Sa proximité avec le port de Gênes garantit une logistique globale efficace.</p>
<p>Elle fera l&#8217;objet d&#8217;une intégration totale en amont avec la production sur site des matières premières à base d&#8217;amidon et utilisera une production combinée de vapeur et d&#8217;énergie, ainsi qu&#8217;un traitement sur site des eaux usées. Ces avantages conféreront au Biosuccinium™ la meilleure empreinte carbone.</p>
<p>« Biosuccinium™ est un acide succinique biosourcé unique, de grande qualité, produit en utilisant la technologie la plus moderne et la plus durable, » selon Will van den Tweel, Directeur Général de Reverdia. « Reverdia a développé une technologie unique brevetée, à base de levure, pour convertir les sucres en acide succinique. Ce nouveau procédé est simple, stable, très économe en énergie, et génère moins de déchets et d&#8217;impuretés que les technologies à base de bactéries actuellement utilisées dans les autres méthodes de production d&#8217;acide succinique biosourcé. »</p>
<p>Une unité industrielle pilote sur le site Roquette de Lestrem en France est opérationnelle depuis janvier 2010 afin de valider et d&#8217;optimiser la technologie et de fournir des échantillons à la clientèle. «L’unité industrielle pilote a fourni une excellente opportunité d&#8217;acquérir de l&#8217;expérience technique sur le procédé de production du Biosuccinium™. En combinant celle-ci aux compétences dont nous disposons en matière de passage à l&#8217;échelle industrielle des procédés et installations, nous nous attendons à un démarrage rapide de notre usine commerciale de Cassano.» explique Jean-Pierre Vannier, Directeur des opérations chez Reverdia.</p>
<p>Le Biosuccinium™ donnera un élan à toute une gamme de produits plus renouvelables et plus durables. A une échelle commerciale plus importante, Biosuccinium™ est pressenti comme capable de concurrencer l&#8217;acide succinique et l&#8217;acide adipique issus de la pétrochimie. Si les marchés existants pour l&#8217;acide succinique issus de l&#8217;industrie chimique comprennent les produits pharmaceutiques, l&#8217;alimentation, les revêtements et les pigments, Reverdia pense que la disponibilité d&#8217;un acide succinique durable, de grande qualité et concurrentiel comme le Biosuccinium™ suscitera l&#8217;émergence de nouvelles applications.</p>

<h2>Reverdia &#8211; Lanciata la joint venture</h2>
<p>Un passo avanti nell&#8217;acquisizione di una posizione di leadership nella produzione di acido succinico di origine biologica con il completamento del primo impianto nel mondo di produzione commerciale di ampia scala.</p>
<p>Reverdia, la joint venture tra Royal DSM e Roquette Frères, ha ricevuto l&#8217;approvazione formale da parte delle autorità di regolamentazione competenti. Reverdia mira ad incrementare la sua posizione emergente di leadership nel campo dell&#8217;acido succinico di origine biologica attraverso la sua tecnologia di produzione brevettata e garantendo una fornitura affidabile che soddisfi la crescente domanda del mercato. Reverdia associa la competenza di DSM nel campo delle scienze dei materiali e della biotecnologia con il know-how di Roquette nella lavorazione di materie prime vegetali.</p>
<p>L&#8217;acido succinico di origine biologica deriva da materie prime non fossili e viene prodotto con tecnologie di produzione sostenibili che riducono al minimo l’impatto ambientale. È’ un “building block” che può essere usato nella produzione di polimeri, di resine e di molti altri prodotti. Le principali applicazioni trovano spazio nei settori delle calzature, degli imballaggi e delle vernici.</p>
<p>Reverdia sarà la prima al mondo ad avere un impianto di ampia scala per la produzione commerciale di acido succinico di origine biologica, che sarà commercializzato con il marchio Biosuccinium™. Esso beneficerà della tecnologia di fermentazione migliore e più sostenibile di produzione dell&#8217;acido succinico da materia prima non fossile, al cui sviluppo si sta lavorando dal 2008.</p>
<p>Il nuovo impianto, che sarà operativo entro la fine del terzo trimestre del 2012, avrà una capacità di circa 10 kt ed è ubicato nel sito di Roquette di Cassano Spinola, in Italia. La vicinanza al porto di Genova garantisce una logistica globale efficiente.</p>
<p>Sarà completamente integrato verticalmente con la produzione di amido che ha luogo nel sito e utilizzerà un sistema di cogenerazione di vapore ed elettricità e un impianto di trattamento delle acque di scarico sul posto. Tutti questi elementi insieme fanno sì che Biosuccinium™ abbia l’impatto ambientale migliore della sua categoria.</p>
<p>“Biosuccinium™ è un acido succinico di origine biologica unico nel suo genere, di qualità elevata, prodotto con la tecnologia sostenibile più avanzata,” ha affermato Will van den Tweel, General Manager di Reverdia. “Reverdia ha messo a punto una tecnologia brevettata basata sui lieviti, unica nel suo genere per convertire gli zuccheri in acido succinico. Questo processo originale è semplice, stabile, ad elevata efficienza energetica e genera meno rifiuti e impurità delle tecnologie basate sui batteri utilizzati attualmente in processi alternativi per la produzione di acido succinico di origine biologica.”</p>
<p>Nel sito Roquette di Lestrem, in Francia, è operativo da gennaio 2010 un impianto pilota per mettere a punto e ottimizzare la tecnologia e per produrre campioni pre-commerciali finalizzati allo sviluppo delle applicazioni. “L&#8217;impianto pilota ha rappresentato un&#8217;eccellente opportunità per acquisire esperienza tecnica sul processo di produzione di Biosuccinium™. Insieme alla competenza di cui disponiamo nel portare su scala industriale processi e impianti, ci aspettiamo un avviamento senza problemi dell&#8217;impianto commerciale di Cassano.” afferma Jean-Pierre Vannier, Direttore Operativo di Reverdia.</p>
<p>Biosuccinium™ fornirà l&#8217;impulso per la produzione di un&#8217;intera gamma di prodotti più rinnovabili e più sostenibili. Su scala commerciale più ampia, si prevede che Biosuccinium™ sia in grado di competere sia con l&#8217;acido succinico sia con l&#8217;acido adipico entrambi di origine petrolchimica. Mentre i mercati esistenti per l&#8217;acido succinico prodotto chimicamente includono l&#8217;industria farmaceutica, alimentare, quella dei rivestimenti e dei pigmenti, Reverdia ritiene che la disponibilità di un acido succinico competitivo, di qualità elevata e sostenibile come Biosuccinium™ avrà come effetto la comparsa di altre applicazioni. <p>The demand for biobased materials for a range of products derived from their chemical building blocks is seemingly reaching an all-time peak. Clearly, momentum is on the side of biorefining companies such as Netherlands-based DSM N.V. and France-based starch and polyols producer Roquette Freres, which are currently targeting production of biobased succinic acid, a prized chemical building block for the production of polyurethanes, resins, polybutylene succinate and plasticizers, as well as a precursor for other chemicals such as 1,4 butanediol. <em>Read more at <a href="http://www.biorefiningmagazine.com/articles/6090/strengthening-the-ties" target="_blank">Biorefining Magazine</a>.</em></p>
